A beautiful, cozy little 1920's bungalow houses the Big Mamou. It was important to us that we
preserve as much of the original bungalow as possible, (truly a labor of love!) and at the same
time provide our guests with a comfortable space to enjoy dining and visiting with friends,
co-workers and family. We serve authentic Southern and Cajun dishes that are made-to-order,
which requires a little extra time to make! Patience is a virtue! Southern cooking is all about
the taste...love & passion in every spoonful, Darlin'!
We use locally-sourced ingredients (we love Farmers' Markets!) and we support our local
farmers and fishermen. Our shrimp and oysters are from the Texas & Louisiana Gulf. We
hand bread each and every one (never prebreaded & frozen from a box!) Our catfish filets are
marinated in a generations-old recipe and as with all our entrees, are cooked fresh when
ordered (NOT reheated from a box!) Our Jalapeno-Sweet Onion Hushpuppies are made fresh
and fried only when ordered; we make our own Roux for our gumbos; we make our own
Etouffee; we make our own breading mixes for our seafood and fish; our Jambalaya is made
fresh when ordered (not sitting around in a steam table all day!); we soak, cook and season our
Red Beans (not served from a can!); we use Poche's Andouille, Tasso & Boudin (from Breaux
Bridge, LA); our PoBoy & Muffaletta bread is Gambino's (a New Orleans bakery); we make
our LA Meat Pies from scratch (family recipe), as well as our Boudin Balls; Bren makes all the
desserts, from scratch, with love & passion in every bite!; all because we CARE!

The Big Mamou closed its doors on February 28, 2013. Rufus & Brenda have put
too many family obligations on the back burner since opening the restaurant in
2009.
Our family is growing...2 granddaughters that we need to spend time with (they
live in Saudi Arabia); older family members who need our assistance from time
to time; dear friends near and far who we have missed spending time with.
Someone once told Brenda that when you own a business, it really "owns you"!
She believes that to be true and has experienced it for herself! So, Rufus and
Brenda made a decision to spend more time with family and friends and give
back to the most important people in our lives.
We have no regrets in opening or closing the Mamou. We have met so many
wonderful people over the past four + years and developed some great
relationships, which we hope will continue. It has been an experience like none
other for Rufus or Brenda! We have many great memories that we will cherish
and talk about for a very long time!
For now, it's time 2-geaux! (sorry, just had to use it one more time!)
